The money, the names, the architecture
A grandmother in Berlin turns the heating down. The bill has tripled. The pipeline that used to bring her gas is at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, and the gas now comes by ship from Texas – from a company whose founders became billionaires overnight, and who have donated to both American political parties.
A yacht rides at anchor in Marbella. A supercar idles in Monaco. A five-hundred-million-euro apartment changes hands. The owner is not at the front. He is enjoying life in the south of Europe and watching the war on television.
In Washington, the Department of Defense has been renamed the Department of War, and the official in charge has announced an immediate increase in contracts to USD 1.5 trillion and declared that the military-industrial complex is now a permanent business.
In the West, ancient scripture is being read at the highest offices of state as a divine commission for present-day war. The men with the nuclear codes are prayed over by clergy who name the next enemy by national name and ask God to destroy them. The Constitution that separates church and state is two centuries old. The prayers are new.
This is the war. This is who pays for it. This is who profits.
The War Profit Cycle is the story of how that became the architecture. Of the destruction, the armament, and the rebuild – and of the people on every side of the cycle who are paid to keep it turning. It traces the money from a Pentagon contract to a Kyiv apartment full of cash, from a peace talk shut down in April 2022 to a payment seven months later. It names the contractors. It names the office-holders. It tells the reader what their tax money has bought.
Thor Magnusson, who founded the Peace 2000 Institute three decades ago, shares the story.
